    OMG I NEED THIS!

    OMG I NEED THIS!

It never ceases to amaze me that even many Veteran* Second Lifers don’t take advantage of the cool keyboard shortcuts.

Please don’t tell me you are still using the drop-down menus for everything, or are using the (gasp) on-screen camera control, or a laptop touchpad!  Trust me, keyboard+scroll mouse is 100 times better (Kristolynn agrees, so it must be so).

Surely you know the basics:  CTRL-I (Inventory), CTRL-F (Find/Search)… but do you know how to check your frames per second, or to take a quick snapshot? Can you undo your last object edit with the press of 2 keys?

So, without further ado, here are some very useful links to check out.  Find one that looks like your speed, print it out, and superglue to your left retina:

For the Noobs or the Lazy:

    For the Adventuresome Avatar:

    For those Without a RL:

What are YOUR favorite shortcuts? I use these every day:monkey2

CTRL-SHIFT-H (Teleport Home….  aka Quick Escape)
CTRL-SHIFT-Y (Set to Midday… begone, evil Night)
CTRL-SHIFT-1 (Yes, I’m OCD about FPS)
CTRL-ALT-T (Toggle Transparent on/off… OMG, what are you hiding under your kilt?)

If you know a cool shortcut not on these lists, share it with us here!

Technical Note: These shortcuts should work in regular SL clients. Alternate (non-LL) viewers or pre-release LL viewers may have slight discrepancies. Gee, did ya think I tested them all? I have other duties.  Now where did I misplace Ener’s laundry? Hope she doesn’t count her unmentionables  ;p

    * Veteran? What constitutes a SL veteran?  Hmmm… if you know about “Advanced Sky”, have started a group, and have learned how to escape a griefer cage, you’re pretty much there.  If you are a LL scripter or have more than 15K inventory items, you are hopelessly addicted… just like me!

Tags: elke hobson, , MadBiker Wolf,

hi all, we were hesitant to get into Facebook (read: Ener likes the low profile but Subquark is a spaz on all things social) but have come to figure out that it is very nice (lol, that’s really fast eh? not like a zillion people figured that out 2 years before we did!) =p

well there is a large second life community in Facebook and it’s actually pretty cool to “extend” second life by connecting to so many wonderful people. i mean we have met a lot of people that we would never have run across just in second life. one of those people has been so gracious and eloquent with us that we wanted to mention her here

she is not a resident of the iliveisl estate but we are really not just about the estate. it’s just that we (read – guess who!) is always on the estate doing stuff for peeps and just building. it also makes sense that we would focus a lot on the estate and it’s residents. but running into Elke on Facebook showed us how wonderful most sl residents are. we have a lot to thank her for (and you too Catzie and MadBiker)

these people re-awakened one of the things we truly love about sl – the variety of people and their viewpoints on life. like MadBiker, he is not hesitant to share his opinion of what we write here and does so in a very open way. he never belittles us but also clearly states his view on topics.  that is a lot to respect and something that many people isl are – people that are true to themselves and open to listen to others.  pretty cool in our books!

so we have become fast friends with Elke and asked her what she likes about sl (something i almost always ask new friends) and she talked about a club that she loves so much that we asked her to explain it a bit here.  it’s her club in that she feels at home there and it is easy to see why!

the social aspect of sl is so important. it is a wonderful place to relax and be whatever you really want to be but are maybe too scared to be irl (yours truly). here’s what Elke said about the club she so loves, her home away from home:

Hi Ener, I just wonder if you could do me a fav… I go most nights [in sl] to a night club its called malibu night club, and the people there are all sooooo friendly, like a big family. I wonder if you could mention this club on your blog one day… or write something about it. Some of the people who go there have been very good to me in the past…

the owners are Darran Guyot and HexxKitten Solei … both do the DJing there too, and what can I say, they and the staff make you feel very welcome each time to go there, always ask how you are, etc.. they talk to each person and you won’t get that everywhere in sl. They make newbies very welcome and help people.

I like it there, because you can relax, you don’t need to talk… I just listen to the music – 80s, 90s, and new stuff. And of course you dance there… my fav…

I meet lots of good friends there and of course can’t forget to mention the Disorganised Dance Division Dancers!  They are Lazyday, Top, Belial, etc { forgot the other names}{might even join then if I can … lol} they are always there on the side and dance; looks very cool.

well, what else can I say. I just like to thank everyone who helped me in the past.. and that’s a few… lol

Here are the staff’s names: the hostesses are Foxee, Angelina, Jerry, Roxy. the DJ’s are Darran, Lordpercy, HexxKitten, Sugababe and Raymondus…

If you need to know more, let me know.. I know lots… lol – and thank you again.let me know t/c xx

wow!!! maybe i am just very sentimental, but to me, Elke’s note on the Malibu Night Club is straight from the heart.  it’s easy to forget how many wonderful people are isl (lol, seeing as i stay hidden in my bunkers from zombies) but clearly, this is one of those very special places where people really care about others and put their passion into others

second life is very rich in character from places like this and these places should be heralded as beacons showing the very positive side of human nature =)

Elke, thank you for being a friend in facebook and in my heart
*cripes, get all teary eyed – what a sap i am* =)

  • Sell your SL Creations!

I often run into SL peeps looking for a way to get started selling their clothing, gadgets, and other SL creations.  It’s amazing the new, useful, and extraordinary things our residents come up with!

But not everyone wants (or can afford) a full sim or a huge retail store.  “Mini” shops that rent by the week are very popular with new SL artisans. And experienced store owners often like to sell their wares in multiple mini shops, to increase their exposure by using multiple SL locations.

You might want to drop in on the Atomic Dreams Future Mall in Enercity Easton, where we have about 10 mini shops left to rent.

You can have from 40 to 70 prims (which is plenty for most peeps to showcase their most awesome items), and prices start around $200 L/week (less than a US greenback!).

A sale of just one or two items a week can easily pay your rent. We will also list your store name in our land description, so peeps can more easily find you with SL searches.

There are also a few private skyboxes and skyhomes for rent high up above the mall. These are great for peeps who want privacy and a place to cal l their own, but don’t need a long-term financial commitment right now.  Use the teleporters on the ground at Atomic Dreams mall to check out our sky-high real estate, which can be moved to any height you choose if you want even more privacy!

SL Map/SLurl shortcut to Atomic Dreams:   http://snipr.com/psr80

PS:  IM the secret word “RADIUM” to DreamWalker McCallister after renting your minishop, and you’ll get one free week rent added with your first paid week! Click any of the rental cubes at the mall for information or help with renting your spot.

    Have fun out there!

  • Alternate Second Life Viewers

Did you know there are at least 15 alternate SL viewers available? Ener Hax mentioned one to me yesterday that I have not heard of, so I did a little investigating.

Meerkat, one of the alt SL viewers

Meerkat, one of the alt SL viewers

Seems lots of peeps have taken advantage of SL going open-source. While the alt viewers are not officially supported by LL, some are interesting.  They may, for example,  resurrect abandoned features from previous SL versions, add entirely new features/tabs/security options, built-in radar, copy protection (supposedly), or other stuff.  One feature many peeps like is a simple [Worn] tab that shows you the clothes and attachments you currently have on… which i find funny since typing  ” (worn” (without the quotes) in my Inventory search is soooo difficult ;)

At least one (SLiteChat) lets you IM to inworld peeps without actually being in-world… kinda like SLvia a chat window, with no graphics. Sounds like it could be handy for keeping in touch on work computers (hee hee) or those that don’t have super-duper graphic cards.

See a list of alternate viewers mentioned on the offical SL site:

    http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Alternate_viewers#Third-party_Viewers

If you’ve tried alternate SL viewers, let us know the good, bad, and ugly!

If you are trying an alt viewer for the first time, do so at your own risk.  They are probably quite safe, but I wouldn’t do any monetary transactions, etc. until you’ve tried them for a while without problems, or done a Net search to see if there are any important issues you should be aware of.

Just a quick note to let you SL’ers know that there are now skyboxes and skyhomes for rent at Atomic Dreams, in Enercity Easton!

If you’d like your own private slice of sky, drop by Atomic Dreams and click the directory sign downstairs for more information, or use the ring teleporters to check out the sights.  We also have shops available for merchants to sell their cool Second Life wares.

Or, if trailer parks are your thing, visit Gulf Dream Estates, right next to Atomic Dreams future mall.

Also be sure to check out the gadgets and steampunk items for sale by NikoKito Aries… I just had to get one of the retro typewriter/answering machines ;)

Enercity Easton has a new shopping mall… or is it an old one?

Atomic Dreams is a Future Mall that somehow survived (mostly intact) from 1952… or was it 2052? The mall is now open to merchants, with one and two-level shops for rent…. and we’ll be adding more (secret) stuff later. It’s designed for easy avatar access, whether you like to walk or fly, or scatter your atoms via the convenient teleporters (gee, you’re lazy!).

    Future Mall

    Atomic Powered Shopping

    Office Hotties ;)

    Office Hotties ... woot!

It’s a unique Second Life shopping experience, with colorful  shops starting at just $180 L/week (a real bargain, trust  me!). Come take a look, try out the cool teleporters, and see if you can find the secret lawn chairs gazing spot.

    Ener's Pics are awesome :)

Got stuff to sell? No, you don’t have to feature  futuristic or cyber stuff… we don’t discriminate, and we love variety.

Oh, did I mention there are a few cool freebies scattered around?  I do love treasure hunts! Do bring your geiger counter and/or radiation badge… we are not responsible for genetic anomalies resulting from the use of atomic energy. Well, surely the 1950s engineers knew all the hazards! Besides, radiation washes off with a water hose, right?

    In-world comments/questions we’ve gotten so far are:

    • “…checking out this wicked architecture!”
    • “Um, did R2D2 have puppies?”
    • “Not my style (Bladerunner??), but it still rocks”
    • “dang, you made this from scratch?” Most of it ;)
    • “Radiation ate my pants!”
    • Can i sell adult stuff here?”   Yes, this is a mature area, just keep it PG or R rated… nothing too extreme, please! Kris might get too excited… (giggle!)

As most of you know, good skins and shapes are some of the most popular items in Second Life. It can be difficult to find good quality designs for less $1000 L!

One of my favorite shops in the iliveisl.com sims is Vanity Shapes & Skins in Enercity Square, and right now Kate07 Bailey is offering her very awesome Jasmin Skin Pack for just $99 L! Most of her skin packs sell for just $500 L, so there are plenty of other bargains at Vanity as well. Demos are available, so you can try before you buy.

Check out her unique skins, shapes, eyes, clothing and accessories at:

  • Dream's Cheap & Awesome SL Bargains

Hi all you lovely iliveisl.com residents!

Shopping in SL is soooo much nicer than in RL, don’t you think?  And it’s nice to find a good freebie or cheapie.  While it’s true that you usually get what you pay for, there are many nice designers out there who offer some great bargains.

I will list some nice stuff here from time to time… only items that are highly rated (4 or more stars), and/or those I’ve tried out myself! All prices are in $L (Linden dollars).

    ________________________________________________________________

    Under $10 Bargain
    Mobile SkyPod Retreat “Orange Grove”
      ($L 1)

    Skypod Retreat

The Orange Grove Skypod is a mobile skypod that you can rezz anywhere that building is allowed. Enjoy the silence up there on your own, or bring your lover to have some quality time. The skypod is loaded with several cuddle animations and a pool with swimming animations.

    ________________________________________________________________

    Under $L 100 Bargain
    Toxic Goth/Vampire Boots
      ($L 49)

    gothic toxic boots
    Gothic Toxic Boots

Boots are one of the most popular items in SL, but it’s usually difficult to find a nice pair for under $300 L or so.  These boots by Toxic are great for vampires, goths, or just for general butt-kicking. They even come with a built-in resizer!

    ________________________________________________________________

     Under $L 250 Bargain
    The Waffle Skybox
      ($L 200)

     Waffle Skybox

Wow, most decent skyboxes go for upwards of $L 500… but Allison Widdershins has made a very unique one that is great for living in at a bargain price.  You just gotta check these out at her Enercity Harbor store (TP from inside her shop up to the Skybox model!).

That’s all for today… more bargains next time!

    iliveisl Sheriff

As I was patrolling around the iliveisl.com sims today (I’m the Sheriff, ya know!),  I realized something. I owe a LOT to this site and the “Ener” sims.  In short, iliveisl.com and its creators are the inspiration behind what I do in Second Life.

I’ve been on SL for over 3 years, but only in last year and a half or so really got into it. I won’t mention my early jobs, but I never expected or planned to be doing what I am now: building and scripting (and, of course, sheriffing). Hmmm, is sheriffing a real word?

My meeting Ener Hax was a serendipitously awesome thing.  I soon had land in the brand new beautiful Enercity Harbor, and was wondering what to do with it. A friend asked, “Hey, why are there no Pepsi machines in SL? Where can I find a big red barn to live in?” and other things.  I thought… “Gee, how hard can it be to make those?”

Before I knew it, I was running a junk store (TaSteLeSS Designs), building things, and learning the Linden scripting language.  My early Pepsi machines are still one of my best sellers, and scripting is now one of my favorite hobbies. It’s nearly as much fun as meeting new and interesting peeps around the iliveisl.com sims!

I don’t always get to be freely creative in my RL  job, where goth geek girls are rare… but here I can build or code anything my dark lil heart desires! If you haven’t tried scripting yet, a good place to start is the handy autoscript site.

So… thanks, Subquark, Ener, Allison and the iliveisl crew. You are the best thing that’s happened to me in SL. If anyone out there needs a great place to live or work or play, come join us.  I’ll be glad to take you on a zombie hunt! There are plenty of cool (and free!) social places, hidden areas, and retro-futuristic designs. I hope to live and “work” here a long time. Oh, and I promise not to tazer anyone unless absolutely necessary!

    Atomic Living Made Easy

i guess back in the day when Enercity was all shiny and new, the city peeps were scared of atomic attack.  the park bunker seems an old sentinel waiting to protect it’s city residents against something that never happened

even in Enerville, it was fashionable to have a community fallout shelter (since then, it’s been turned into the Eville Atomic Lounge complete with martinis and high class  hors d’oevres

that one seemed pretty sophisticated compared to this new small one that the Enercity Public Works just uncovered in Enercity Park

this one is certainly very small and must have been a last chance shelter for those commuting to and from work.  the original Enercity bus stop is just a few 100 feet away with it’s restored retro rotating coffee ad complete with fake steam

hmmm… i wonder how many other hidden places and treasures are yet to be found? i know for a fact there is at least one that only a few peeps have discovered, and there are probably some i haven’t found yet.  yay, it’s like the coolest treasure hunt ever!
