Scientists from Canada’s GRAP Occupational Psychology Clinic and the University of Quebec modified a three-dimensional video game to create a computer-generated virtual reality environment as part of an anti-smoking program.
could this be Second Life or OpenSim probably? (likely OpenSim since you can run it for free on your own box)

they had two groups – one that crushed cigarettes and the other that “grasped at balls” o_O
lol, apart from “grasping at balls” sounding dirty, doing that as part of a study might make me smoke more! (for sure would drive me to drink!) =D
so the butt crushers ended up with lower nicotine addiction, who would of thunk it?
