holy crap! i must have been stuffing down the last of the summer poutine when this news came out!

Japan’s 3Di company has come out with a web viewer that can run OpenSim grids! so think flash player type web browser plug -in, 3Di’s plug-in allows your regular web browser to launch you into a virtual world

now there isn’t one for Second Life yet, but it’s only a matter of time (i think that’s what never-answer-an-email-Pathfinder is working on in the Linden Boston office) =p

so what does this mean?

well if you are out there looking at all the other OpenSim-based grids as an alternative or supplement to Second Life, this is a pretty compelling feature to want

imagine you are a big company and want to allow your customers to have a virtual world experience from your website (like looking at a book in a bookstore and seeing other people looking at the same book, you could start up a convo with them about that book and maybe get recommendations on similar books right then and there).  rather than go download a big client app and prob have a lot of people blocked because their workplace does not allow the proper ports to be open; you just surf over to the site, and like viewing flash content, it just happens

this gets rid of a lot of barriers that the average person won’t (or can’t) deal with

that Subquark Hax is smarter than he looks with his Level 2 Venue Reaction Grid dealio, how smooth would that be if you could add an OpenSim experience to a website!

i guess that would open him, and others, to a whole potential of custom web work (just like the old days of flash) for companies wanting to add a virtual world element to their online presence
